We are also going to try to attend the Hay on Wye sale, as well as visit a few private farms. Should be really interesting. We leave Sept.20th and return Oct.9th. The very next day we are off to the Team Penning weekend, we are also off to The Mane Event in Chilliwack, so as you can see we are busy, busy, busy for the next 6 weeks. We will let you know how all of that turns out as well! Sept 6th, 7th - We attended the C.A.T.P.A. finals in Olds, Alberta. We came home with the following placings: Sept.6th - Loren on Ibn and myself on Cookie, along with team mate Bob Collenge, got the fastest time of the day for all divisions (5,7,10 and Open classes) with a 27 second run! Interesting Information |
Did you know that they have finally completely mapped the Equine Genome? This is good news, not only for horse breeders and owners (as this will give us a very clear picture of many equine diseases, inheritable problems, predispositions and much more), but also for we humans, as we share many common afflictions. For more info on this subject you can visit www.uky.edu/Ag/Horsemap/ . |
Recommended Reading |
I have always been a bit of a book worm. I have found invaluable information in the form of books on almost any horse subject you can think of. Here is a very short list of some of the books that I have found most interesting. Look them up if you have some time to spend.
|
Centered Riding 2 - Further Exploration Sally Swift. Trafalgar Square Books
This is her latest and last book, as she is now deceased. It is a continuation of her first book 'Centered Riding'. This book has even more of her innovative ideas regarding imagery and more new riding techniques. In this book, she also addresses the horse, his physiology and how to help improve his musculature and way of going. A must read for anyone who was impressed with her first book |
|
Xenophon, The Art of Horsemanship. Robert Hale LTD. Last printed by J.A. Allen +Co.in 2004.
This book is perhaps the oldest written training information known to mankind. Xenophon was by profession a Greek soldier who fought in many wars over twenty three centuries ago. He was also a master horseman and was probably not only the first person to put his training ideas to paper for the general public to read, but the first trainer to point out that horses are living, feeling, individuals who all need to be handled differently. Almost all of the things that he said in this unique book hold true today. An historically and informationally fascinating read... |
|
Riding Logic
This is truly the dressage trainer's bible. Mr. Musler was the master of his day and all of his techniques and theories still hold true. This book may be a little hard to find but it is definitely worth searching out.

Conditioning Sport Horses
Dr. Clayton is a world renowned biomechanics researcher who is on the cutting edge in this area. This is a very all-discipline oriented informative book about the different types of conditioning used to improve the physical well being of performance horses.

|
Principals of Conformation Analysis By Deb. Bennett, PhD, Volumes 1,2 and 3.
These three books are almost a prerequisite (at least in my small mind!) for anyone who is seriously considering judging ,breeding and yes, even riding horses. Dr. Bennett, a paleontologist, is almost unequaled in her expertise regarding conformation and form to function. These books are surprisingly concise, easy to read and understand, so please, take a serious look at them if you can. |
|
Practical Guide to Lameness in Horses
This book (written in partnership with Cherry Hill) is a very comprehensive compilation of diseases, injuries and conformation predispositions of the lower leg and foot. It is a a lot of reading but I'm betting that almost anything that you are curious about will be covered in it.

True Horsemanship Through Feel By Bill Dorrance and Leslie Desmond
This book is written by the brother of Tom Dorrance, author of True Unity. Leslie Desmond, a good friend of Bill's, decided that he too should put his stories and experiences down on paper for horse people to enjoy and learn from. She basically wrote down every word he said verbatim, which is why it is a little hard to follow sometimes, as Bill was not of a "litererary" background! However, it is a charming book with some very interesting pictures to go along with all of his stories and good advice. Well worth wandering through!

What Horses Say Trafalgar Square Publishing, © 2004.
This is a very entertaining book relating the story of renowned animal
communicator Julie Dicker. They present a surprisingly analytical
study of over 60 horses that Julie communicated with in order to try
to find out answers to questions that almost every horse owner wants
to know. Whether she is actually relating to these horses in the realm
of the 6th sense, or whether she is a very astute observer and incredible
guesser is for the reader to decide. Which ever is your opinion, the
material that she has recorded is a fascinating glimpse into the Equine
Psyche. Well worth reading no matter which side of the debate you
may be on.
